WHY WED THRICE? Legalise Nigerian Traditional Weddings

Weddings have been in existence in every culture even before the migration of people. It is a special ceremony organized to formalize & celebrate the union of two souls. It is also seen as a special spiritual occasion for both families to express their well wishes & prayers for the couple.

The major traditional weddings in Nigeria are known as Igbankwu or Igbeyawo in Igbo & Yoruba tribes respectively. The process involves series of activities that are symbolic in nature & understood by the people from that tribe. The peak of the ceremony is when the dowry is paid & recieved by the parent of the bride also when the wine presented by the bride is received by the groom especially in Igbo culture.

Despite all the elaborate ceremony the traditional wedding is only recognised under customary law which appears to be inferior to Civil law weddings. The other weddings which are from other cultures are deemed superior because the Civil law register is signed & a certificate issued.

Due to the need to make Nigerian marriages more legal we see intending couple go through three different types of wedding ceremonies. They do the traditional wedding,  church wedding & if the church does not have the register, they go to the registry. Why wed thrice?! 😀😀

Since the marriage register is what the law recognizes then intending couples should look at incorporating the register into the traditional wedding ceremonies, that way there will be no need for duplicated wedding ceremonies.

So, you do your traditional weddings & sign the register which makes it bidding under civil law or just do the traditional ceremony without the registery which makes it binding under customary law.

A lot of women find the white wedding gown enticing & may not want to miss that out, oh! well, that can be worn at the wedding reception after the main traditional wedding ceremony is done which should be brief like the church wedding.

The benefits of incorporating the registry to Nigerian traditional wedding will help reduce time, stress & most especially the cost of organising a double wedding ceremony.

Our traditional activities should not be inferior to the traditions of foreigners rather it should help refine ours & make life easier for all of us.
